343.4 Rule (1)
School District of Prairie Farm
YOUTH OPTIONS PROGRAM GUIDELINES
GUIDELINES:
1. Each student who is considering the Youth Option Program option must submit the completed School District
application to their counselor no later than March 1 if enrolling in
the fall semester and no later than October 1 if enrolling in the
spring semester.
2.
Applicants must be considered 11th and 12th graders and not have a
history of disciplinary problems. In addition, they must have a 3.0 GPA
and no more than one F as a final grade the semester prior to and
during application.
3. This program is not intended for at-risk students unless authorized by counseling and administrative personnel.
4.
The School District may refuse to allow Special Education students to
attend a technical college if the cost would impose an undue burden on
the School District.
5.
The Administration and/or the school counselor will notify the student
as to whether courses submitted will be approved for high school credit
by March 15 for the fall and December 15 for the spring semester.
6.
The maximum number of cumulative post secondary credits the school
board will pay tuition, fees, and books for is 18. Those 18 credits
will consist of credits earned through ITV, online, or Youth Options
Programs.
7.
The parent or guardian is responsible for the student's compliance with
the compulsory school attendance requirement under S 118.15(1)(a),
stats. Students are expected to maintain a schedule of classes at the
high school that has been approved by the Principal until they have a
confirmed schedule for the Post-secondary institution. Students who
stop attending a post-secondary institution, or withdraw from a class,
will be required to report back to the high school to be assigned high
school classes. In that case, the parent/student will reimburse the School District for all tuition and fees incurred for the student.
8. If a student fails a class or receives no credit for the class, the student, parent, or guardian must reimburse the School District
the cost of the class. If a student, parent, or guardian fails to
reimburse the District for the cost of the class, the District shall
disallow the student’s further participation in the Youth Options
Program.
9. The Board of Education will grant high school credit for post-secondary classes using the following criteria:
a. The post-secondary course compliments and/or expands on a course of study or sequence of courses offered by the School District.
b. The course curriculum meets the same standards, using the same criteria for rigor and content, as other courses previously approved by the Board of Education for credit towards graduation.
c. The course must support a student's progress toward graduation.
d. The course will not be accepted for high school credit if it repeats the course content for which a student has already received a passing grade and high school credit.
10. High School credit for post-secondary course work will be awarded credit based on the following criteria:
3 Post-secondary semester hours = 1 high school credit
11.
Post-secondary classes accepted for high school credit will be placed
on the high school transcript with the grades not used in calculating
the student's GPA.
12. a. The School District will pay for the cost of tuition and fees for any course that
is taken at an institution of higher learning or for high school credit
that is not comparable to a course at the high school.
b. In addition to tuition and fees, the School District also pays for the student's books. Therefore, at the end of the semester students must return course books to the Prairie Farm High School. If these books are not returned, the cost will be added to the student's senior bill.
c. The student is responsible for the cost of tuition, course fees, and books for any postsecondary course comparable to a course offered at the high school.
d. The student must pay for a post-secondary course taken for post-secondary credit only.
e. The student must pay for all incidental college fees, tools and supplies that the student retains. If the school purchases tools and supplies, then the tools and supplies must be returned to the school.
13.
Any student or parent who wishes to appeal the decision regarding the
disapproval of credit towards high school graduation or the number of
high school credits to be awarded, may do so using the following
process:
1. Appealing to the Pre K - 12 Principal by submitting a written letter of disagreement.
2. Appealing the Pre K - 12 Principal's decision in writing to the District Administrator.
3. Appealing the District Administrator's decision in writing to the Board of Education.
4. Appealing the Board of Education's decision in writing to the State Superintendent of Schools. (This must be done within 30 days of the Board of Education's refusal.)
16.
The parent or guardian of a student, who is attending a post-secondary
institution, and who is taking a course for high school credit, may
apply to the State Superintendent for reimbursement for the cost of
transporting the student between the high school and the post-secondary
institution. Eligibility criteria and application forms are available
through the School District or the State Superintendent’s Office.
