A new School Nutrition and Physical Fitness Policy has been adopted by the School District of Prairie Farm as of 06/19/06.

Policy Statement

The School District of Prairie Farm believes there is a direct link between physical fitness and good nutrition to academic achievement. The combination of physical fitness and nutrition is essential to a child’s well being, physical and emotional growth.

Rationale:

The link between good nutrition and health has been studied extensively in recent years and is well documented. Healthy eating and physical fitness is particularly important for the nation’s young people. As our young people learn good eating habits and exercise on a regular basis, there is a strong likelihood they will avoid life threatening problems such as obesity and other chronic diseases as they grow into adulthood.

As a result of this new policy the elementary teachers are asking parents to consider sending treats to school which are low in fat, calories, and sugars.

Following you will find some suggestions that we ask you to consider:

Fruits &Veggies

carrots, celery, cauliflower

apples, bananas, oranges, grapes

raisins, fruit cups, applesauce cups

Grain

popcorn (not microwave)

 pretzels, trail mix, Chex mix

granola bars, breakfast bars animal crackers

Dairy

String cheese, go-gurt,

sliced cheese, pudding cups

Other Treats

jell-O cups, teddy grahams

fruit roll ups, fruit snacks

small sandwiches, ice cream treats

juice boxes
