Description:
English 9 is made up of the study of
both literature and composition with equal time being devoted to each. In literature the emphasis is upon lyric
poetry, narrative work, short stories, and the novel. The course offers a foundation in the
rudiments of reading, listening, speaking and writing.

Description:
English 10, a continuation of the
literature and writing, develops ability to read and appreciate good
literature. The writing section
develops further skills in language usage through composition, vocabulary
work, spelling, written techniques, and the research paper. A complete novel(s) will also be studied.

Description:
English 11 explores short story and
drama elements in further detail.
Character, plot, setting, theme, oral interpretation, and part reading
will be emphasized. An extensive study
of how man communicates (verbal and nonverbal) and the problems he has will
be the background information to this course.
The three basic types of speech to be written and delivered will be
the information, persuasive and entertaining speech.
There will be criticism of written
speeches and oral speeches. Students
will learn and demonstrate computer software to illustrate a speech
topic. The written skills include
learning to organize, use main ideas and specific details. Students will also use the Reader’s
Digest to read a variety of non-fiction articles and sharpen language
skills.

Description:
This course deals with methods of
mass communication in modern society.
Advertising, newspapers, television, and film comprise the major units
of this course. Each unit will be
studied in terms of its history, technical aspects, and function or influence
in society.

“Writing Models”

Description:
This course is a writing lab which
focuses on the mechanics and form of good writing. Units include a review of grammatical
skills, social letters, business letters, forms in your future, methods of
essay organization, and a career in research paper. Since units cover a wide variety of topics,
the course meets the needs of most students.
However, Writing Models is recommended for anyone pursuing a post-secondary
education.

Description:
Basic
“Classical” novels will be studies which depict conflicts and problems
in society. These novels will be
studied for literary merit and social criticism. Books of criticism will be studied so students
learn to be discriminating in their evaluation of written material. Written work will concentrate on evaluation
and synthesis of ideas presented in the novels. Novels will include works by Agatha
Christie, John Steinbeck, F. Scott
Fitzgerald, William Golding, Ernest
Hemingway, Jules Verne, Maya Angelou and others.

Description:
This course concentrates on the
advanced skills necessary for those students planning on continuing their
education. The course will highlight
grammar, mechanics, methods of organization, and logical thinking skills to
prepare students for post-secondary composition work.
