Description:            

 

This course will provide a basic understanding of the double entry accounting system.  Students will learn concepts including:  accounting rules, the accounting equation, the accounting cycle, transaction entry into journals, posting to ledgers, end of period financial statements and reports, payroll systems, banking activities, taxes, depreciation, uncollectible accounts, inventories, notes and interest. An automated accounting system will be integrated into the classroom activities.  This course provides accounting fundamentals to give students the foundation for advanced course work in the fields of business or accounting after high school.

Description:            

 

This class will provide instruction for hands on application of the yearbook publication.  It will give direction in producing a quality attention getting and journalistically sound yearbook.  The class will also stress the master of project development, responsibility, priority setting, word processing skills, desktop publishing, graphic design, as well as the business principles of advertising and sales.  In addition to publishing the yearbook this class also completes jobs for area businesses and individuals, which include buttons, business cards, graduation invitations, etc.  Annual photography students may need to dedicate time outside the school day for picture taking at school events.

BUSINESS LAW

Description:            

 

This course will focus on the following:  Basics of laws and ethics, US Court system, criminal law, business law (tort law, contract law, consumer law, agents, employment law, starting a business), law governing:  marriage, renting, buying a home, insurance, retirement and estates, field trip to Barron County Courts, field trip to a Realtor, projects:  famous criminals, mock trials.

 

 

 

COMPUTER APPLICATIONS

Description:

 

In this course students will learn basic skills in a variety of programs.  The course will begin with a brief keyboarding review, and quickly move into word processing skills, including formatting and basic features in Microsoft Word.  The course then moves on to the spread sheet skills, including basic set up, formulas, creating charts and other skills using Microsoft Excel.  The course will also feature a brief unit covering database skills using Microsoft Access and a unit on using the Internet to find information.  Presentation skills will also be emphasized using basic guidelines for creating a PowerPoint presentation.  The course will end with students learning a few very basic desktop publishing skills in Adobe Pagemaker.  The course will also cover organizational skills - using folders to organize and save files.

 

This course is strongly recommended for all students, especially students who plan to take annual, web design or other technology intense courses.  This is also a great course to prepare student for college requirements.

PERSONAL FINANCE

Description:

 

This course is designed to prepare the students for their use of financial services and providing a global look at business activities and citizenship.  This course will focus on economics:  Business in the Global environment-Economic Decisions, Economic and Business Activity Measurements, Global Business overview, Social Responsibility of Business and Government, Personal Finance Management-using a checkbook, budgets, personal financial statements, Income Taxes, Credit, Insurance and (time permitting)job hunting such as resumes, cover letters, references, applications, and interviews.

 

 

 

KEYBOARDING

Description:

 

In this course students will learn how to use touch typing methods.  We will begin with the home row and work through all the alphanumeric keys, and then move on to the punctuation and symbol keys.  Students will also complete lessons using the number pad.  The course will focus on speed, accuracy and improvement.  Students will learn proper technique, take timings, complete proofreading activities, learn basic features using Microsoft Word and formatting guidelines of basic documents.

 

This course is recommended for all students who need to increase typing speed, especially for students who wish to take computer applications, annual, web design or other technology intense courses.

MARKETING

Description:

 

This course will focus on a number of topics relating to the business world.  Basic business and marketing concepts will be taught and will set the stage for the rest of the course.  Students will learn concepts of free enterprise (supply and demand), occupational skills (customer service, professionalism, communication, technology), marketing research techniques, the four p’s (product, price, place, promotion) sales and selling, entrepreneurship, and the careers available in marketing.  Throughout the course students will complete a variety of projects from creating their own product, to writing a business plan, to testing for quality control (paper airplane test).  This course will teach students a wide range of business related topics and will help to prepare students for college and the work force.
