Prairie Farm Elementary School 2011 Be
Well Barron County Challenge Champions
Be Well is a healthy
lifestyle grant through Barron County Safe and Stable Families Coalition (www.bewellbarroncounty.org)
This 5 year $750,000 grant is for Barron County members reaching more than
schools but also county workplaces. If you work within the county of Barron
this could be a family activity with everyone competing. Prairie Farm Schools is
taking an active role in the Be Well Program. The Prairie Farm Elementary will
be competing against other Barron county elementary schools.
Last year Prairie Farm
Elementary School along with Glenwood City Elementary and Tiffany Creek
Elementary in Boyceville competed in the healthy eating and fitness program
called Wisconsin Movin’ and Munchin’ Challenge! As most of you remember……Prairie Farm came out
on top with the best participation for both students and staff. This year, points will be totaled from each school
in the county to see who comes out on top. We are competing by percentage of
participation so it is very important
for as many students to participate as possible. The winning school will receive
various prizes which will include playground equipment, phy-ed materials, and
more.
We will also be sending home
some tips on healthy exercise and nutrition during the year. In addition, we
are working with local food producers to provide taste-testing opportunities
for our students to try new fruits and vegetables. This grant is also allowing
us to update portions of our phy-ed curriculum through the purchase of
pedometers for student use. Another key component that this grant provides is the
access to a county dietician which we will utilize through classroom lessons
and presentations.
Overall, this grant will help
meet the needs of our community in many different forms as we strive for a
healthy lifestyle.
