Description:

 

This course will be designed to introduce students to the craft of creating art using metal as the primary material.  Students will learn various methods of working with metal and investigate techniques including casting, etching, repousee, appliqué, enameling and piercing.  Projects will include using sheet metal, various gauges of wire, recycled materials, foil, cast metal and metallic papers and scratchboard.  Students will learn to create both functional and sculptural pieces of artwork and will experiment with the art of jewelry making.  Several art styles and cultures throughout the world will be referenced during the semester.

 

COMPREHENSIVE ART

Description:                        

 

Self Expression takes a close look at some of the many ways to express oneself through art and creativity.  Students in this class will learn how to translate thought and emotion into art, as well as explore the human figure and facial structure.  This is a great class to take if you enjoy working with a variety of art materials.  Materials experimented with include clay, wire, packaging tape, acrylic and watercolor paint, and numerous drawing materials.

GRAPHIC DESIGN

Students in Design will take a look at the important role design plays in society today and learn about the impact it has on people throughout the world.  During the semester

students will examine the principles of design and explore the different areas of student within the design world.  Areas of focus will be graphic design, industrial or product design, fine art, photography and fashion design.  This course is an excellent choice for any student who might be considering art or design as an occupation in the future.  It is also a good choice for anyone interested in using a variety of materials to create art.  Materials utilized throughout the semester include clay, paper-mache, duct-tape, a variety of drawing materials, a digital camera and the computer.

DRAWING

Description:                        

 

Drawing is one of the most basic ways to create art and has been used to communicate ideas for thousands of years.   In this class basic drawing skills, techniques and vocabulary are taught.  Students will learn to draw from direct observation, experiment with cartooning, learn to judge proportion and understand depth, form and space.  Mediums used will be pencil, charcoal, conte crayon, pen and ink, marker, colored pencil and more!  Many important artists throughout history will be discussed over the course of the semester.  This is a great class for both beginning and advanced ability students!

PRINTMAKING

Description:

 

The art of printmaking dates back centuries.  Today, it is known throughout the world as one of the most important and widely used means of creating art and design.  It is an exciting form of art that often allows the artist to create multiple reproductions of the same design.  The various printing methods explored in this course include relief

printing, monoprinting, stamping, engraving, etching and screenprinting.   A variety of materials will be utilized including linoleum, scratchboard, plaster casting, fish, vegetables, Styrofoam and wood to name a few.  May important artists who contributed to the history of printmaking will be referenced throughout the semester.

PAINTING

Description:                        

 

Students in painting will take a close look at the various ways to create 2D art using paint as the primary material.  Basic vocabulary, color theory and harmony will be investigated.  Through experimentation with several techniques and methods of painting, students will gain an understanding and appreciation for this form of art.  We will primarily be using acrylic paint and will also experiment with watercolor and mixed media.  A variety of surfaces will be painted on including, stretched canvas, wood

panel, paper and pre-primed canvas board.  Many famous artists throughout history will be referenced throughout the semester.

CLAY

Pre-requisite:                       None - Open to Grades 9-12

Description:

 

This course is for students interested in exploring the art of creating 3D forms with clay.  Students will develop basic skills and learn a wide range of vocabulary associated with this type of art making.  Several hand-building techniques will be introduced, including pinch, slab and coil construction.  We will also experiment with using different types of art styles and cultures will be referenced throughout the semester, including Japanese, Chinese, Southwest Indian, African and Art Deco.  Due to storage space, allowed class size is a maximum of 18 students.
