Qualifications |
The individual employed for this position must be in good health and have the ability to do physical work as well as possess problem-solving skills. This position requires the individual to dress appropriately for the position. Must have sufficient dexterity to handle all equipment efficiently and safely. Must be able to exercise judgment and initiative in maintaining standards of job responsibilities listed below. The Head Custodian must possess the skill to organize projects and assigned tasks on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual basis.
The individual must also:
- Schedule work projects-make recommendations to administration.
- Supervise subordinates
- Delegate responsibility
- Communicate effectively with superiors and subordinates.
- Follow a schedule of regular duties and activities as needed to complete job requirements (work check list).
A minimum of a high school diploma is required; post secondary training in a trade field is desirable. |

Primary goal of the Head Custodian/ Building and Grounds Supervisor |
The person in this position has the responsibility to maintain all School District assets and keep them in working order. The person shall be an effective communicator and have the ability to get along with others and solve work-related problems with tact.
The individual will receive feedback from the District Administrator regarding projects and activities. |

Position Requirements and Responsibilities |
|
1. Supervisory Responsibilities |
- The Head Custodian supervises subordinates at all times.
- Assign work to employees.
- Check work of employees. Offer corrective action when necessary.
- Evaluate subordinates on a yearly basis.
- Schedule department meetings on a regular basis (complete with agenda and follow-up).
- Receive employees’ complaints/grievances and deal with them at the lowest level.
- Report to administration where there may exist an employee discipline issue.
- Work with administration in selection of new employees.

2. Daily Responsibilities |
- Unlock doors.
- Turn lights on.
- Check furnaces and thermostat settings.
- Put flags up and take down as required.
- Put down tables in multi-purpose room.
- Check bathrooms and clean fountains.
- Clean lunch rooms.
- Classroom/Hallway cleaning: as designated by District Administration.
- Wastebaskets
- Mop and vacuum
- Shampoo carpet, etc.
- Remove garbage, clean floors.
- Emergency cleaning as necessary.
- Monitor all building security equipment and keep in working order.
- Clean windows-exterior and interior.
- Requisition supplies as needed.
- Receive and sign for freight.
- When appropriate, supervise student summer workers.
- Perform other duties as requested by administration.

3. School Event Responsibilities |
- Assist in the assembly and disassembly of the gyms for events such as:
- Athletic contests
- Assemblies
- Concerts
- Plays
- Student activities scheduled at school
- Graduation
- Community events.
- Assist in the assembly and disassembly of the field for athletic contests.
- Work at home football games.

4. Maintenance Responsibilities |
- Maintain the following operations in good working condition:
- Heating units
- Electrical system
- Plumbing facilities
- Air conditioning units
- Hot water heater unit
- Roof exhaust fans
- Air exchange units
- Operate propane vapor system
- Operate primary and secondary boilers.
- Other mechanical operations
- Maintain the painting of the buildings with a schedule developed in conjunction with administration.
- Maintain floors on a regular basis.
- Maintain the grounds of the school with regular mowing, trimming, snow removal, fencing, etc., as appropriate.
- Maintaining grounds is also part of the responsibilities of the Head Bus driver/mechanic.
- Emergency maintenance as needed.
- Recommend and schedule maintenance needs with administration.
- Other duties as requested by administration.

5. Record Keeping |
1. Record energy consumption on a yearly basis for comparisons from year-to-year. This includes:
· Electrical
· Gas for heat
2. Keep a record of supplies used for cleaning and maintenance used over time.
3. Keep a record of services in various operations of the buildings. |
