Qualifications

Knowledge of library procedures and practices essential.  Must possess word processing literacy and aptitude of r computers and the use of DC ROMS, WISCAT, WISCON, MAS, and the Internet.  Must be able to exercise judgment and initiative in maintaining library and standards of good librarianship for staff and students.  Must be able to prioritize work and be flexible throughout the day.  Must be self motivated, have efficient time management and organizational skills. A high level of confidentiality required for this position.  Assist head librarian in maintaining the operation of the IMC.

Complete responsibilities in an organized and timely manner.  Resolve work related scheduling and other types of difficulties in the school setting in an appropriate manner.  Flexibility in time and need changes and adaptability in the needs of students and staff.  Care about young people and be a positive role model in young people's lives.  Be willing to assist others with special tasks when the need arises.  Understand and work within all policies of the School District of Prairie Farm.

Position Goals of  the IMC Assistant

  1. To efficiently assist in the operation of the IMC and assist students and staff in use of the IMC and materials and equipment within.
  2. To supervise students using the IMC and those studying in the IMC.
  3. Perform all duties with self determination and self assurance, motivation, personal effectiveness and efficient time management and organizational skills
  4. Displays a positive attitude, maintain a good relationship with students, staff, and provide a positive educational experience.

Responsibilities

A.  Check daily schedules.

B.  Check in returned books.

C.  Maintain periodicals, periodical lists, periodical files, and vertical files.

      1.  Keep most recent newspapers on sticks and clip from older papers    for the vertical file dating each article for future bibliographical use.

      2.  Maintain lists and checklists of periodicals received.

      3.  Routinely file back issues of periodicals and maintain periodical files according to dates.  Must possess judgment periodical files according to dates.  Must possess judgment and memory skills of what periodicals are used for research and dates stored.

     4.  Request needed vertical file materials from Reference and Loan in Madison and copy for future use.

D.  Maintain files of materials catalogs for staff perusal.

     1.  Route catalogs to specific departments as needed.

E.   Sort IMC mail.

       1.  Sort director's mail, IMC mail, newspapers, catalogs,

             Interconnect, NIBS, and other newsletters.

F.    Maintain careful records of WISCAT materials.

        1.  Files must be maintained for borrower, lender, and date due and

             date returned.   

        2.   Careful packaging procedures must be followed with returns.

        3.   Have knowledge of postal regulations, CESA mail, and mailing

              deadlines.

G.    Assist in processing of new materials to make them shelf ready in a

        Timely fashion.

         1.   Must possess knowledge of book repair, laminating procedures,

               Accessioning, proper spine label production and placement,

               Book cards and book pocket preparation.

H.    Prepare fine lists for all schools so that all materials are returned to

        the IMC in a timely fashion thereby minimizing lost materials.

I.     Check out books and materials, maintaining date stamp and charging

        tray for correct date.  Maintain the faculty checkout system.

J.     Keep rolodexes for Current Biographies, Zoobooks, and all paper-

        back books up to date.

K.    Maintain shelf list and IMC inventory.

        1.  Maintain a list of IMC needs according to unfilled requests and

             new book suggestions.

L.     Keep inventory of all supplies used and needed by IMC for future

         orders.

M.    Maintain and schedule use of audio-visual equipment, TV - VCR's.

         1.  Replace bulbs with correct bulbs on projectors and overheads

              Using correct procedure for bulb life.

         2.  Keep inventory of bulbs used.

         3.  Maintain repair list for equipment.

N.     Maintenance of IMC copy machine.

         1.  Knowledge of operation and functions.

O.     Must possess knowledge of Dewey classification and Sears

         Subject Headings for shelving books and shelf reading.

P.     General clean up of circulation desk, dusting shelves and books, and

        other library equipment.  

 

2. Retrival

  1. Research to assist students and teachers.

      1.   Must possess knowledge of catalog numbers, use of card catalog,

            vertical files, Periodical guides, indexes, cross-referencing.

      2.   Students form History, English, Family and Consumer Ed., and

            Science classes; FFA speech participants, and Forensics students

            need assistance in research for topic information.  Term papers

            are semester projects which involve weeks of research in the IMC

            Each year students from grades 5 - 8 are involved in the county

            conservation speaking contest, this means coming to the IMC for

            research on environmental and conservation topics.  The Science

            Fair also requires assistance to students looking for that unique

            science experiment.  These groups are a sampling of some of the

            classes coming to the IMC for information for their various and

            sundry projects.

            a.   The IMC assistant must schedule the classes ie. History and

                  English, into the IMC on a weekly basis and at that time assist

                  students with research.  If a student is unable to find infor-

                  mation during that time due to the complexity of research

                  project, it will be necessary to assist those individuals during

                  their study hall times, before and after regular school hours.

            b.   The IMC assistant must be dedicated in assisting students by

                  keeping track of individual topics and requests so when IMC

                  materials and books, interlibrary materials, periodicals,

                  scanning Internet and WISCAT provide more than one sub-

                  ject area the additional information can be distubuted to the

                  other students or retained for future use in the vertical files.

            c.   The IMC assistant will also be required to expand research for

                  students within the IMC and on WISCAT and the Internet.  A

                  student request may not be an appropriate source of infor-

                  mation.  Therefore the IMC assistant will be required to do

                  more extensive research with the student.

  1. Knowledge of the Internet and internet procedures.

      1.   Keep file of the addresses of the search engines for future

            reference.

      2.   Knowledge of downloading will be necessary in order to obtain

            Information from the Internet for student and staff use.

      3.   Use of the Internet to obtain information form other libraries such

            as new materials.

  1. Familiarity with other libraries to alert students of the availability of materials they may have for their use.

3. Instructional 

A. Ability to use all library materials for research.

     1.   Reference works other than encyclopedias,

     2.   AV materials and equipment.

B. Ability to use non-book materials as source for research.

     1.   Vertical files,

     2.   Indexing and cross referencing using Magazine Article Summaries

          And Periodical Guides.

C.  CD Roms as a source of information.

     1.   Ability to install and use CD Roms as source of information for

           research as well as know the fundamentals of instructional games.

D.  Prepare Bibliographies for staff on requested topics and deliver

      materials to classroom as needed.

E.  Invite elementary students to tour the IMC in the spring.

F.  Prepare displays to reflect important events or designated holidays

     during the school year or specific topics of study, ie. Black History,

     Women in Literature, National Music Week, etc.

4. Supervision

A.     Maintain a working IMC accommodating grades 5 - 12 which offers a peaceful study environment as well as a library where the students _________

      1.   Materials sent to students which don't have to be returned, ie.

            Magazine articles, copies of documents, must be checked out

            to students and returned to IMC and stored in the vertical files

       for future use.  (An example of this would be information sent to

       a 9th grade student for a report on Ancient Egypt is filed for

       future use of the sixth grade class which also follows this course

       of study.)

B.     Use of WISCAT to borrow materials which we don't have.  Knowledge of WISCAT procedures, as follows:

·         IMC Assistant must possess knowledge of Interlibrary Loan procedures as designated by the Indianhead Federated Library System.

·         WISCAT must be searched to verify all student and staff requests.  Proper procedures must be followed to ensure Barron county library records are searched.

·         After selections are made through WISCAT orders must be placed to appropriate libraries.  IMC Assistant must be knowledgeable with each library's interlibrary loan procedure.

·         The correct number of copies of the request are filed under student's name and held until materials are received from lending library.

·         Careful records must be kept as to which materials were received and from whom.  Even though a request was sent to a particular library it may be filled by another library.

·         After materials are received a due date must be assigned by the IMC assistant so that materials are returned to the library in a timely fashion allowing adequate time to return materials to the lender.

·         All materials records must be filed according to date due and borrowing students.  Records must be checked daily to monitor returns.

·         When interlibrary loan materials are returned to the IMC, records must be checked, cards and return slips must be re-inserted into borrowed materials, Items must be packaged for safe mail return and proper mail procedures must be followed.  The original request is filed as proof that materials have been returned.  We also use request forms for future use.  Students can use interlibrary loan to find materials to read to for their enjoyment and also to prepare their research papers.

C.     Schedule classes into the IMC - grades 5-12.

D.     Supervise students coming from classes and study halls.

E.      Supervise study halls scheduled in the IMC.

F.      Oversee student use of computers.
