Bachelor’s Degree; Instructional Media Specialist DPI License 900 or 902

Reports to:

District Administrator

Primary goal of  the District Library Media Specialist

  1. To provide all students with an enriched library environment containing a wide variety and range of materials that will invite intellectual growth and aid all students in acquiring skills needed to take full advantage of library resources.
  2. To assist all staff in using all media materials for instructional purposes.

1. Encourage students to become avid and competent readers by providing them with appropriate reading materials and the guidance to find those materials when needed.

2. Assist students and staff in identifying, locating, and interpreting information within and beyond the classroom walls.

3. Teach students the search strategies needed to sort through the vast array of information available via print and electronic sources.

4. Arranges for flexible scheduling of facilities, staff time and collection to meet the needs of individuals, small groups and large groups for research, browsing, and recreational reading.

5. Keeps abreast of current literature and new technologies by reading

reviewing journals, selection resources, education research, trends, and

methods.

6. Promotes the principles of intellectual freedom by providing services and resources that create and sustain an atmosphere of free inquiry and by serving as an advocate for intellectual freedom within the school and in the larger learning community.

2. Instructional Partner and Teacher  

1. Assist teachers in locating materials, whether on the Internet, in print, multimedia or community resources.

2. Collaborate with teachers in designing curriculum that integrates content areas with information literacy skills.

3. Supports the curriculum through collection development.

4. Provides leadership in assessing, evaluating and implementing

informational and instructional technologies.

5. Takes a leadership role in promoting and demonstrating the use of new technologies and media with teachers and building administration.

6. Provides instruction for school personnel in the selection, use, evaluation and production of media and new and emerging technologies.

7. Collaborates with teachers, administrators, and other members of the

learning community.

 

3. Program Administrator  

1. Directs, organizes and supervises the personnel and services essential to a unified library media program centered on student's needs and the instructional goals of the school.

2. Initiates and maintains contacts with principal, teachers, and students to evaluate library media programs, facilities, materials, and equipment.

3. Develops and maintains a long-range plan for library media services and integrates the activities designed in the plan into the total school curriculum.

4. Maintain collection: selection, electronic catalog, materials processing, and weeding collection.

5. Manage the audiovisual equipment of the school, including budgeting, requisition, and trouble shooting.

6. Communicates the philosophy and goals of the school library media

program to students, teachers, administration and community.

7. Prepares and administers an annual budget for the Library Media Center.

8. Develop and enforce policies and procedures for library behavior, lost books, computer use, equipment use and fines.

9. Establishes and maintains an environment in the Library Media Center in which students and staff can work at productive levels.

10. Participates in the training of student and volunteer staff in the Library Media Center.

11. Develops and continually updates the professional expertise necessary to function effectively in the Library Media Specialist role.

12. Networks with other professionals through participation in local, state, and national organizations.

13. Performs other duties as assigned.
