Primary goal of the District Guidance Counselor |
The goal of this position is to provide students with guidance and counseling services which facilitates pupil self awareness, self understanding, and self acceptance in relation to educational, social, personal and career development objectives. |
|
Position Requirements |
|
1. General Guidance Program
|
- Promote staff and community awareness of guidance program. Keep public informed of guidance activities.
- Responsible for the development and organization of the total K-12 guidance program, including:
- Vocational
- Educational
- Personal/Social information
- Pupil appraisal
- Placement
- Referral
- Informational research
- Cooperate with faculty, and promote interest among teachers to further guidance activities throughout all grade levels.
- Inform parents and students about post secondary opportunities including college and technical schools.
- Inform parents and students about other career opportunities.
- Inform students and parents about scholarships and other financial aid programs and opportunities.
- Provide individual and personal assistance to students requesting such services.
- Provide information to students and parents about course selection and career paths. Work with faculty members to achieve this goal.
- Work and consult with principal in schedule development at the middle and high schools.
- Conduct graduate follow-up studies.
- Assist students and employers with job placement.
- Keep student records updated and current.
- Communicate with parents and appropriate professional staff to discuss student needs and progress.

2. Student Assessment and State Testing Programs |
1. Obtain and use individual inventories of assets and liabilities with assistance of staff as appropriate.
2. Coordinate the District’s assessment programs such as the WSAS, ACT, PSAT, etc.

3. Special Education |
1. Serve as a consulting member of Exceptional Education Need (EEN) student IEP staffing teams. |
|
4. School Discipline and Attendance |
1. Counsel students with discipline problems and assist the principal to develop a discipline plan of action.
2. Advise students and parents when students demonstrate poor attendance patterns and are determined to be at-risk.
3. Assist principal when a truancy referral is necessary.

5. Professional Growth and Development
|
1. Participate in professional organizations and professional growth activities such as seminars, courses, workshops, and staff development programs that promote counseling concepts and procedures.
2. Attend additional meetings as necessary, such as ESEA, AODA, and state testing as needed and required. |
|
6. General Guidance Services |
Provide services as follows:
- Student interviews.
- Counsel academically struggling students
- Self-referrals
- Group Counseling
- Work with EEN.
- Coordinate AODA activities.
Information:
- Test information for individuals and groups.
- Occupational information and trends.
Orientation:
- Assist with parent/teacher conferences, provide input where needed.
- Assist with new student enrollment and orientation.
- Transitions: Elementary, Middle, and High School.
Educational and Vocational Guidance:
- Facilitate 8th grade adjustment for high school.
- Provide occupational information in the guidance area.
- Assist and advise in the development of tech prep, education for employment, and school transition programs.

Perform such other duties as assigned within the Board’s authority, the Master agreement, and state and federal law. |
