Primary goal of the District Reading Specialist and Title I Teacher |
- The goal of this position is to provide reading and math support for students who qualify for Title I services.
- The individual employed in this position is responsible for the District SAGE program.
- The individual in this position is responsible for continually upgrading skills and attend meetings as appropriate.

Position Requirements |

1. Development of Curriculum
|
- Assist in the development of a K-12 developmental reading program.
- Serve as a Chairperson for a district-wide reading steering committee.
- Facilitate and direct a reading needs assessment program.
- Work with district personnel in the continued development of a District reading philosophy consistent with the needs of students, teachers, and community.
- Lead the District in the formulation of an appropriate District reading program goals and objectives.
- Assist with the formulation of the scope and sequence of the K-12 basic reading and content reading skill components of the comprehensive reading program.
- Provide direction and leadership in the development of the K-12 study and curriculum guides.
- Provide leadership for District personnel who desire to try new strategies in meeting the needs of students at all grade levels.
- Serve as a consultant on reading methods appropriate for individuals and groups of varying achievement and abilities. Assist staff in differentiating curriculum.
- Serve as a consultant to curriculum committees studying areas as textbook readability, selection, vocabulary development, concept development, supplemental materials, and development of study skills.
- Support interest in reading in the school and community, implementing best practices, including programs such as SSR as well as community reading events.

2. Resource work with Classroom |
- Assist teachers with identifying strengths and weaknesses of children. This includes working with students with reading deficits as well as those who require accelerated work.
- When requested, demonstrate reading methods and materials in the classroom.
- Assist classroom teachers with grouping procedures within the school and individual classrooms.
- Work with classroom teachers in how to fully use all instructional materials and resources available. Research best practices in math and reading and share findings with classroom teachers and how to implement such practices.
- Brief new teachers and classroom aides as to the philosophy, goals, programs, procedures, and materials for the school reading program and assist them in developing these goals.
- Keep staff updated in best practices and encourage use of them in instruction when appropriate.

3. Consultant Service to Administration |
A. Plan and prepare and conduct in-service programs for teachers, based on an analysis of needs.
B. Assist the administration in implementing the school reading program. |
|
4. Evaluation |
A. Assist in the screening of students new to the District for appropriate placement.
B. Administer diagnostic reading tests when appropriate.
C. Coordinate continuous evaluation of District reading program and make recommendation for changes.
D. Coordinate the study, consideration, and selection of reading textbooks, tests, and other evaluation and instructional tools and make possible recommendations for acquisition as needed.
E. Identify reading level of texts and work with teachers in understanding the concept of textbook leveling.
F. Conduct ongoing classroom visits and consult with teachers as necessary relative to reading programs and instruction. |

5. Coordination
|
A. Provide information to the community concerning the reading program and reading in general.
B. Assist parents in their understanding of how children learn to read and how they can help their children learn to read.
C. Work with school support staff and school administration to facilitate the coordination of the reading program with the total curriculum.
D. Coordinate reading activities between and within grade levels. |
