School Counselor
The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction believes that the learning, personal/social, and career/technical education needs of students in the state's public schools can be more effectively met with a kindergarten through 12th grade (K-12) guidance program that systematically and comprehensively addresses developmental stages which students experience as they progress through school. Such an approach stresses prevention of problems by providing students with age-appropriate skills and information through instruction, group interaction, and individual counseling.
The comprehensive school counseling program integrates learning, career/technical education and personal/social developmental competencies. The school counseling program reflects the progression of student development from kindergarten through grade 12, and is delivered through the direct service program components of the guidance curriculum, individual planning, responsive services, and support services. All program components are implemented by certified school counselors in coordination with other school staff, administration, and community resources. This counseling program helps ensure equal opportunity for all students to participate fully in the educational process.
Our school counseling program is comprehensive and developmental in nature. Developmental guidance is based on the premise that, as all children mature, they pass through various developmental stages vital to their growth. During these stages, specific kinds of learning and development must occur. The program spans the K-12 years and matches student compentencies that must be age and grade level appropriate.
