Selection of Classroom Instructional and Library Media Center Materials
The legal responsibility for classroom instructional and Library Media Center (LMC) materials used in the School District of Prairie Farm rests ultimately with the Board. Responsibility for the selection of instructional materials shall, however, be delegated to the professionally trained staff employed by the school district.
The main objective of the selection procedure is to provide the students with a wide range of educational materials on all levels of difficulty and in a variety of formats, with diversity of appeal, allowing for the presentation of many different points of view.
The objective of the library media center is to make available to faculty and students a collection of materials that will enrich and support the curriculum and meet the needs of the students and faculty served. The selection of materials is a continuous process because of the changing curriculum content and the increasing availability of new materials.
The District Administrator, in cooperation with appropriate staff members, shall be responsible for establishing procedures for selecting classroom instructional and LMC materials.
The procedures established shall reflect the following goals of the Board:
1. To provide materials that will stimulate growth in factual knowledge, practical skills, literacy appreciation, aesthetic values and ethical standards.
2. To provide a background of information that will enable students to make intelligent judgments in their daily lives.
3. To provide materials that will enrich and support the curriculum, taking into
consideration the varied interest, abilities and maturity levels of the students served.
4. To provide materials on opposing sides on controversial issues so that young citizens may develop under guidance the practice of critical thinking and analysis.
5. To provide materials representative of the many religious ethnic, and cultural groups and their contributions to American heritage.
6. To place principle above personal opinion and reason above prejudices in the
selection of materials of the highest quality in order to ensure a comprehensive
collection appropriate for the instructional materials.
The School District of Prairie Farm shall not discriminate in the selection and
evaluation of classroom instructional and LMC materials on the basis of sex, race, national origin, ancestry, creed, pregnancy, marital or parental status, sexual orientation or physical, mental, emotional or learning disability. Discrimination complaints shall be processed in accordance with established procedures.
