Promotion of Elementary School Students

The following is the procedure to be followed in those cases when promotion during the course of the school year seems appropriate:

  1. The student, who, based on observations of teachers or other professional personnel, seems to warrant consideration for promotion during the course of the year shall be evaluated by the school psychologist to determine that student's current level of functioning in the academic, social, and emotional areas.

  1. If the student’s potential appears to warrant further consideration, a conference shall be called by the Pre-K 12 Principal to discuss the possibility for grade advancement. .  In attendance at this conference shall be:  the Pre-K12 Principal, the Psychologist, the School Counselor, the teachers and parents involved.  The purpose of this conference shall be to determine the overall capability of the child in all pertinent areas. Taking all pertinent factors into consideration, the group shall reach a consensus regarding the appropriateness of grade advancement for the student in question.

  1. At the conference with the parents, the above mentioned school personnel shall share their concerns and insights with the parents about the probability of success for the student involved.   The parents shall be asked to share their concerns and insights with the rest of the group. 

  1. If grade advancement is called for, this shall be done in a gradual manner, integrating the child into the appropriate class in areas of his/her greatest strengths until full integration is achieved.  The Principal shall be in close contact with the professional personnel involved as well as with the parents.  Based upon this on-going assessment, the placement shall be continued or terminated with the consensus of the above mentioned conference group.

  1. It is understood that the Pre-K12 Principal shall monitor the child's progress throughout the year.  Written record shall be made of conferences held and recommendations made as well as of actions taken on behalf of the child.  This shall be done during the year in which the placement occurs.

  1. It is further understood that the District Administrator shall be regularly appraised of such situations as they arise as well as of the recommendations made and actions taken.
