Head Bus Driver/Mechanic

Qualifications

Mental alertness, neat personal appearance, good health, cooperativeness and dependability. This person must have sufficient dexterity to handle all equipment efficiently and safely. Must be able to exercise judgment and initiative in maintaining standards of job responsibilities.

 

The individual must possess a valid driver’s license and CDL. The person must be physically fit in order to successfully discharge duties of the position. The individual must have experience in working on vehicles, including larger vehicles. This individual must also be able to supervise other bus driver’s and work closely with administration and secretaries in route planning, student discipline, etc.

Primary goal of Head Bus Driver/Mechanic

The goal of the Head Bus driver and mechanic is to effectively discharge the duties of his/her job. This person must be able to get along with coworkers and others. This individual is one who is comfortable with students, and members of the general public. This person must genuinely like and care for students. This individual must be able to exercise judgment and initiative in maintaining standards of job responsibilities. The person must be organized and efficient.

The Head bus driver mechanic is responsible for developing and following a budget as approved by administration.

Position Requirements and Responsibilities

1.Bus Maintenance Responsibilities 

  1. Conduct inspections of all buses to assure safety and appropriateness of equipment. The inspection should include tires, brakes, anti-freeze, oil, first aid supplies, lights, etc.
  2. Provide periodic maintenance such as oil changes, greasing, tire changes, brake changes, transmission fluid, etc.
  3. Replace and repair such items as transmissions, engines, radiators, fuel pumps, water pumps, axles, etc.
  4. Change out tires and spare parts for replacement and repair.
  5. Wash school vehicles and touch up paint when necessary.
  6. Order necessary parts for periodic maintenance.
  7. Receive and sign for freight shipments.
  8. Supply general mechanic tools.

 

2. Bus Route Responsibilities 

  1. Establish bus routes with District Administrator.
  2. Recommend driver assignments to District Administrator.
  3. Drive one morning and evening “regular route.”
  4. Secure drivers for activity buses.
  5. When available, take class and activity trips that occur during the day.
  6. Open the bus garage for bus drivers on a daily basis.
  7. Advise the District Administrator concerning road conditions or other circumstances that may cause a change in the regular schedule of bus drivers.
  8. Assign extra curricular trips per contract.
  9. Assist in supervision of evaluation of bus drivers.

 

3. Other   Responsibilities

  1. Assist with snow removal.
  2. Help with lawn mowing.
  3. Maintain an  orderly and neat bus garage.
  4. Any other responsibility as assigned by the District Administrator.
